“Happy New Year!”
Another resounding phrase that irks me to the core. It just makes me sick! So repugnant is this dreary statement! Yes. Another year dawns in, while another dusks behind us. What is so remarkable about that?
If anything, the commencement of another year should be a grim reminder of our rapidly fleeting time on this distasteful planet. And even more doleful, that life is ebbing away into nothingness.
It is no secret that there are extra-terrestrial beings out there in the expansive universe. Beings probably more intelligent than us(honestly even using humans as a yardstick of intelligence is utterly disgraceful). I am certain they observe what we do and wonder; like why the hell should supposedly intelligent beings be celebrating something as trifling as the revolution of the planet around the sun.
But aliens(for they see what we do) are vaguely astounded by our penchant to heap our insignificant lives around naturally-occurring, unconscious and boundless forces of the universe.
I am sure they cackle at our desperate attempts to make meaning of the meaningless. And do so in a precariously stupid manner. Because “making meaning” out of something in humanese, is synonymous to supplanting our ages-long delusion that somehow the universe revolves around us. And that every small tilt, every damn star up there, every successful rotation of the planet, or every phase of the moon; translates to something ethereal scintillating within us. In a planet that has existed myriad of years before we could even structure a coherent tongue!
Hear them say. A happy new year reflects a new chapter in your life. And that the universe is about to mill something great and life-changing and transformative and fantabulous and inspiring and god-knows-what-more-mystical-bulshit.
There is nothing new about the year. It’s just a damn revolution. And it has happened before life sufficed on this planet. And will be there even after the collapse of human civilization(the f**k is this?) And to imagine we are celebrating it just a week after celebrating Saturnalia. Another stupid attempt by humans to heap the coming of their their virgin-born saviours. (Jesus, Mithras and Horus).
